Shadowblack

Could You Survive As An Outlaw?

Four months after fleeing his own people, Kellen has discovered he’s an even worse outlaw than he was mage. It doesn’t help that his only allies are a swaggering card player and a thieving squirrel cat.

Then he meets Seneira, a blindfolded girl who isn’t blind, and whose secrets get them caught up in a conspiracy of magic, blackmail and murder. Now Kellen must find the mage responsible before the entire frontier falls victim to the mystical plague known as the shadowblack.

Description

Sorcery is a Scam

On the run from bounty hunters and mages, Kellen’s desperate to learn the Argosi fighting ways that enable Ferius to take down her enemies. But she doesn’t seem interested in teaching him – or at least, not the things he wants to know. When they meet another Argosi for the first time, Kellen starts to uncover more about his mentor and the ways of her mysterious order.

All of that’s going to have to wait, however, until Kellen can track down the mage who seems determined to see the entire frontier falls victim to the mystical plague known as the shadowblack.

This witty western from a master of magic storytelling will enchant both YA and adult readers.

Original Cover Sketch

This was the original design for the cover. We decided we wanted Seneira to have more agency in the cover and so the design evolved. I'm still not sure what that throwing star was all about . . .

Firewood: Deleted Scene

I really liked this little scene between Reichis and Kellen as they both wrestle with the loss of their homes. I had to pull it from the book because it would’ve slowed the pace a hair too much, but maybe you’ll disagree?
